Finding Your Way with Esri’s ArcGIS Indoors

Presented by: Sean Lain, Deputy Director of Geospatial Solutions

Thursday, April 17, 2:55 - 3:15 PM, GIS MANAGEMENT 2

Esri’s ArcGIS Indoors platform invites creative solutions, expanding the benchmark for accessibility, navigation, and operational efficiency within innovative opportunities. JMT will explore creative solutions developed for the Maryland Aviation Authority (MAA) and John Hopkins University Homewood Campus. ArcGIS Indoors was developed across varying environments to provide a user-focused solution. Both solutions will examine how and why ArcGIS Indoors was implemented.

JMT implemented the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model (AIIM) to manage data for roughly 300 facilities, including terminals, hangars, and offices for the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA). JMT and MAA Partners leveraged Esri's Field Maps and Survey123 applications in tandem with the AIIM data model, assisting in the development of an ADA Assessment Viewer and Facility Condition Assessment Viewer to monitor the accessibility and infrastructure integrity of the facilities across MAA’s facilities. By using the AIIM, MAA enhanced the decision-making and accessibility for stakeholders, thus increasing efficiency and ensuring compliance, sustainability, and service excellence at MAA. JHU Homewood Campus Wayfinding Application used the ESRI Indoors Application framework and leveraged AIIM to ensure accessibility across diverse environments, including navigating indoors and outdoors across slopes and constrained spaces. The application was modeled to route users from building to building, allowing options for accessible / ADA-conforming routes based on impediments. Built-in reporting (Survey123) functionality was designed for users to report ADA issues along routes. Collaborated with Esri staff to enhance software and address gaps like mobile app legends and custom messaging to extend Esri technology to environments with accessibility challenges.
